Safeguard 9 - Email and Web Browser Protections

Procedures

9.1 - Ensure Use of Only Fully Supported Browsers and Email Clients

Supported Browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari.
Supported Email Clients include Gmail and Outlook.

9.2 - Use DNS Filtering Service

The IT Security Office maintains the DNS Filtering Services for Virginia Tech

9.3 - Maintain and Enforce Network Based URL Filters

9.4 - Restrict Unnecessary or Unauthorized Browser and Email Client Extensions

9.5 - Implement DMARC

Virginia Tech does not implement DMARC.

9.6 - Block Unnecessary File Types

The browsers and email clients listed in 9.1 have built in file type blocking to prevent accidental downloading of malicious files. If you require additional information about this, contact your department’s IT office.
