Paul Mather, Ph.D.

IT Security Analyst

Paul Mather joined the IT Security Office in April, 2023. For the 40 years prior he focused on IT, and worked at VT since 2009 in the University Libraries as a Unix Systems Administrator and as a Systems Engineer. Paul has a BSc (Hons) in CS from Teesside Polytechnic; a M.S. in CS from Virginia Tech; and a PhD in EECS from University of Wales (Bangor). His research interests include digital libraries; information retrieval; digital repositories and preservation; and scalable storage. Latterly, his interests lie squarely in the area of cyber security. When he joined the IT Security Office, Paul held the following GIAC certifications: Certified Enterprise Defender (GCED); Certified Detection Analyst (GCDA); and Defensible Security Architecture (GDSA). He is also a former certified GIAC Python Coder (GPYC).
