Deleting information from your computer does not always guarantee that all traces of it has been removed from your computer. Given the increasing size of hard drives it is less likely that your information will completely removed by being written over.
We recommend that if you wish to ensure your information is removed and to remove any sensitive information from your computer that you use a secure delete option as listed below.
Using the Secure Delete Option on a Mac
- Put the file in the trash can
- Choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash
To prevent the recovery of files you deleted previously, open Disk Utility (Applications /Utilities/Disk Utility), choose Help > Disk Utility Help, and search for help on erasing free disk space.
Eraser
Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 2003 Server and DOS.

Secure Erase
Secure Erase is a positive easy-to-use data destroy command, amounting to “electronic data shredding.” It completely erases all possible user data areas by overwriting, including the so-called g-lists that contain data in reallocated disk sectors (sectors that the drive no longer uses because they have hard errors in them).
